Flautists are inclined to lament the shortage of repertoire for their instrument. It is surprising, therefore, that the considerable British repertoire has remained relatively unexplored. Going back in time, there is no lack of sonatas for flute and thorough bass from the baroque period. It would be politically incorrect, and probably ineffective, to perform these on more recent instruments. This disc takes a look, therefore, at some of the music written in England in the first part of the 19th century. One of our composers has his feet firmly planted in a previous age. The others are surprisingly romantic. The use of a light-toned Erard piano from about 1880 and once the property, it is said, of Cosima Liszt, will hopefully represent a fair compromise between what these composers heard and the heavier instruments of our own day.
